Today sees the launch of this year’s Independents’ Day campaign, with the nationwide day designed to encourage the public to shop in independent retailers taking place in exactly three months time on 4 July 2013.

Organised by the National Skills Academy for Retail, and now in its third year, Independents’ Day is a national campaign that aims to give a voice to the UK’s independent retailers. Over the next three months, retailers are being encouraged to download the campaign posters and other supporting materials from www.retailindieday.com, organise celebratory in-store events and join forces with other retailers, town centre teams, and skills shops, for town-wide celebrations.

Additionally, this year, the campaign has joined forces with Independent Retailer Month, which runs throughout July, meaning Independents’ Day will kick start a whole month of celebration of the independent retail sector.

“Independent retailers make up 92 per cent of all retail businesses in the UK and their contribution to a location’s identity and community is unrivalled,” says Jane Rexworthy, head of the National Skills Academy for Retail. “We recognise how important they are to local economies and to create a healthier high street, and we are delighted to give independent retailers a voice to reach out to the public. Throughout the campaign, we aim to raise the importance of independent retailers with consumers, encouraging people to shop locally, throughout the year, and particularly on Thursday 4 July. We also want to raise awareness amongst independent retailers of the vast amount of support and training that is now available at a substantially reduced price.”

As Rexworthy notes, for the first time this year, depending on location, a package of training and business support is being made available at low cost to independent retailers in England. The package is available to independents and their staff to help them acquire and hone essential skills to grow their businesses and help them survive and thrive in the current climate. The support available includes WorldHost customer service training; the Guide to Successful Retailing Programmes, inspired by Mary Portas and covering Business Planning, Finance, Sales and Marketing and Buying and Visual Merchandising; as well as mentoring services. Similar support packages are available to independent retailers in Wales through the Thriving High Street campaign and in Northern Ireland.

“2013 is the third year for Independent Retailer Month and we intend it to be the best yet,” says Retail Champion Clare Rayner, founder of the Support for Independent Retail campaign for which Independent Retailer Month is one of the key annual events. “I’m delighted to work alongside the NSA for Retail and it’s great to have this national, consumer-facing event as a kick start to this year’s Independent Retailer Month. Whilst we’re focusing on celebrating our smaller retailers and consumer facing businesses, it is important to remind ourselves that in the second half of 2012, and for the first time in over two years, more independent shops closed than opened. It’s imperative that our independent retailers get the support of their local community to survive and thrive in very challenging trading conditions. Consumers need to appreciate that local traders, like any business, need customers to survive.”
